Barrio Triste is set in Medellín, 1987, as a group of teen outcasts steals a news camera to document every detail of their dangerous lives. The first feature from acclaimed photographer and Bad Bunny music video director Stillz redefines the found footage genre as a haunting, poignant coming-of-age story with a disturbing twist. Set to an awe-inspiring score by Arca and produced by Harmony Korine's collective EDGLRD, the film taps into the anxieties of a youth culture from the margins of history yearning to be understood.

This screening, on Wednesday, September 16, is part of CINEMÁS, a monthly program by HLFF in collaboration with Star Cinema Grill! Don't miss a special screening of Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS on Sunday, September 13, accompanied by a live original score by Austin Composer & multi-instrumentalist DAVID DIDONATO.

This new score includes elements of classical, electronic, metal, dance, vaporwave, industrial, and shoegaze. The live performance is on a double-necked guitar, accompanying pre-recorded drum beats, pianos, synthesizers, organ, and various other sequenced instruments, painstakingly synchronized to match the film.

The restoration of the film adds new integration of scenes and subplots long considered lost, which endows METROPOLIS with even greater tension and emotional resonance, as it dramatizes the conflict between wealthy über-capitalists and rebellious subterranean laborers—orchestrated by a diabolical scientist capable of destroying them both.

Look alive, cinema lovers, because Na Hong-jin is back with a new epic!

HOPE is the South Korean filmmaker's latest film. In the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung- min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung- ki (Zo In-Sung), set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions. HOPE opens at the River Oaks Theatre on Wednesday, September 9.

THE YELLOW SEA - A Korean man in China takes an assassination job in South Korea to make money and find his missing wife. But when the job is botched, he is forced to go on the run from the police and the gangsters who paid him. (Monday, September 7)

THE WAILING - A stranger arrives in a little village and soon after a mysterious sickness starts spreading. A policeman is drawn into the incident and is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter. (Tuesday, September 8).
