Alright students, you’ve earned partial credit, but if you want to aim for an A+ - join us this Monday for NIGHT OF THE COMET! ☄️ 🎞️

Described by Birth.Movies.Death as “The bastard offspring of an entire drive-in era”, NIGHT OF THE COMET follows “Valley girl” sisters who find themselves alone after Halley’s Comet destroys their wealthy community—and most of Los Angeles Their post-apocalyptic shopping spree is disturbed by predatory zombies, as well as an ill-intentioned scientific cabal (led by Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis).

Post-screening conversation by University of Iowa graduate panelists Celeste Howington and Ariana Martinez will explore how the film relates to the horror genre, the ‘camp’ elements, its place as a touchstone for the 1980s, and its depiction of apocalypse.

Attention students! Cinema Summer School continues this week with a cult classic rarely seen in theaters - LAKE MUNGO

Sixteen-year-old Alice drowns while swimming and her family begins experiencing inexplicable events in their home. The family hires a parapsychologist whose investigation unveils Alice’s secret double life and leads them all to Lake Mungo. An essential Australian horror, heralded as a masterpiece in atmosphere, Lake Mungo is Director Joel Anderson’s chilling, devastating examination of the hole left in the heart of a family after a death. Styled as a documentary, this found-footage classic has become a cult favourite for critics and fans of horror.

Post-screening conversation by panelists Caleigh Flynn, Celeste Howington and Jeremy Laughery will engage in an audience conversation on indexicality, horror found-footage/mock-documentary, memory, grief, and digital life. Tickets are available now at icfilmscene.org

Already wandered through the Backrooms? Over your Obsession? Come feed your mind with our friends and Bijou alums for the 2026 Cinema Summer School! 🎬📚

Curated in collaboration with University of Iowa Cinematic Arts graduate students, this
iteration of FilmScene 101 examines four different films, each of which serve as iconic and interesting objects for film study and theorization. Stick around for post-screening discussions with grad panelists, and dive deeper into politics, found footage, q***r aesthetics, color, sound, and more.

Make sure to grab your Hall Pass before the show - attendees of all four screenings will graduate with honors with a Cinema Summer School diploma! 🎓
