Join Cornell Cinema and the Milstein Program tonight at 6pm for a free screening and discussion of EVERYONE IS LYING TO YOU FOR MONEY, a documentary directed by actor Ben McKenzie.

In EVERYONE IS LYING TO YOU FOR MONEY, actor and author Ben McKenzie turns investigator, pulling back the curtain on the cryptocurrency industry and the culture of hype, misinformation, and speculation that fueled its explosive rise. What began as a promise of financial freedom has evolved into a volatile ecosystem rife with fraud and reckless gambling, carrying with it devastating consequences for everyday people.

Through firsthand reporting, expert interviews, and a clear-eyed examination of major collapses and scandals, the film traces how crypto became one of the most aggressively marketed financial products of the modern era—and how warning signs were ignored, dismissed, or deliberately obscured. As fortunes are made and lost, EVERYONE IS LYING TO YOU FOR MONEY asks a sobering question: who benefits from the chaos, and who is left to clean up the damage?

Accessible, urgent, and often darkly ironic, the film is both a cautionary tale and a call for accountability — cutting through the noise to expose a system built on speculation, influence, and belief rather than truth.

After the screening, there will be a panel discussion with Gili Vidan, Assistant Professor of Information Science, and Owen Marshall, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Departments of Science & Technology Studies and Information Science at Cornell.

Free admission! Sponsored by the Milstein Program in Technology and Humanity.

Cornell Cinema is pleased to partner with AIISP @ Cornell University to present Adam and Zach Khalil's imaginative feature documentary "Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild]" as part of our ongoing "Experimental Lens" series on Sunday, 10/25 at 5pm.

In this experimental documentary directed by Adam and Zach Khalil (Ojibway), history, spirituality, and the law collide as tribal repatriation specialists fight to return and rebury Indigenous human remains. The film documents the emotional and vital work of MACPRA (Michigan Anishinaabek Cultural Preservation and Repatriation Alliance). This alliance, made up of repatriation specialists representing all Michigan tribes, fights to bring their Ancestors and funerary objects home from settler colonial institutions like museums, libraries, and archives.

Winner of the Audience Award: NEXT at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, Adam and Zack Khalil’s monumental and formally daring film follows the pressing struggle to rebury Indigenous human remains that have been held in sterile storage, laying bare the history of Indigenous collections and the battle to enforce the laws intended to facilitate their repatriation to the communities they were originally stolen from.

Using an essayistic approach alongside vérité portraits, kaleidoscopic visual effects, and imaginative animations that encapsulate past, present, and future, "Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild]" celebrates the courageous individuals who carry out this hard and emotionally draining labor of return.

Cien Con Cultura continues this Thursday, 9/24, at 6pm with UN POETA, an acclaimed dark comedy from Colombia!

Middle-aged and erratic, Oscar is a failed writer who has given up on life. Unemployed and living with family, he wanders the streets of Medellín in a drunken stupor, lamenting the state of literature in his home country, where he has succumbed to the cliché of the tortured artist. However, the opportunity to mentor a young student named Yurlady offers a chance at redemption — if he doesn’t screw it up first.

In a performance marked by darkly comic pathos, first-time actor Ubeimar Rios stars in Simón Mesa Soto’s Cannes Un Certain Regard Jury Prize-winner UN POETA, a raw and riotous farce about how good deeds are often met with the universe’s idea of cruel and unusually poetic punishment.

Free admission! The film will be introduced by Tatiana Bedoya, PhD candidate in the Department of Romance Studies. Cornell Romance Studies

Sponsored by Cine Con Cultura 2026, Ithaca's annual Latinx Heritage Month film festival, the Department of Romance Studies, and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program.

Join us on Friday, 9/18 for the Ithaca Premiere of CHRONOVISOR (2026, dir. Kevin Walker and Jack Auen)!

CHRONOVISOR is an “fiendisly clever” academic mystery that is sure to delight lovers of libraries and the countless mysteries they contain.

While writing a monograph on historical theories of memory, Béatrice (Anne Laure Sellier), a respected academic at Columbia University, becomes beguiled by the allegedly true story of the Chronovisor, an occult device said to reproduce visuals from any point in history on a TV screen, rumored to be created by Benedictine monks and suppressed by the Vatican. Her obsession with the mysterious machine drags her from her Upper East Side apartment through the depths of New York City’s hidden libraries to the edge of a breakthrough.

Shot on 16mm, the film delights in the archival materials that underpin its narrative, capturing the richness of analog textures and reproducing them with tangible fidelity.

Film on film alert! 🎞️⚠️

One of the things that makes Cornell Cinema so special is our commitment to showing analog film, including 16mm and 35mm prints! This practice allows us to honor the artistic integrity of the medium and to educate audiences on the complex technological histories of filmmaking and exhibition.

Our first batch of 35mm prints have arrived in the booth this week: Agnes Varda's VAGABOND screens in 35mm this Friday, 9/11 and Sunday, 9/20, and Justin Lin's BETTER LUCK TOMORROW screens in 35mm on Thursday, 9/24 and Friday, 10/2.

Special thanks to head projectionist Tim White for these behind-the-scenes photos!
