🎬 Alien: Covenant (2017) — A Dark, Splintered Vision
Alien: Covenant is a visually stunning yet deeply divided film that attempts to bridge two conflicting identities. On one hand, it functions as a philosophical sequel to Prometheus, continuing director Ridley Scott’s grand, existential exploration of creation, artificial intelligence, and the flaws of humanity. On the other hand, it bends to fan pressure by forcing a return to the classic slasher-in-space formula, complete with explicit Xenomorph action.
The film's absolute high point is Michael Fassbender’s dual performance as the androids David and Walter. His cold, calculating, and deeply unsettling portrayal of David anchors the movie's best sequences, turning the story into a gothic mad-scientist tale. The introduction of the pale, aggressive Neomorphs also provides genuine tension and some of the franchise's most brutal body-horror moments.
However, the film suffers from an identity crisis. The crew of the colonization ship Covenant makes notoriously foolish choices that serve only to move the body count forward, leaving little room for the audience to connect with anyone other than Katherine Waterston's Daniels. By trying to satisfy both the high-concept sci-fi crowd and traditional horror fans, Covenant ultimately compromises on both, offering a beautifully shot but frustratingly uneven chapter in the Alien lore.
