Los Angeles Playwrights Lab http://www.losangelesplaywrightslab.com Producing original works from the writer's perspective What happens when L.A. writers get tired of complaining?

The Los Angeles Playwrights Lab is born, co-founded by Robert Gardner and Michael Shaw Fisher. The group’s mission: to produce original works from the writer’s perspective.

“I listened to countless writers during lunches, walks, jogs, in the middle of movies, at plays complaining about not writing enough,” says L.A. Playwrights Lab co-founder Robert Gardner. “Not really trying to get ‘their’ wor

k in front of the public. Always waiting for ‘someone’ to tell them they will produce it. After years of this, I approached writers and proposed they be their own producers. It took some convincing but here we are and we mean to stay and continue working in Los Angeles.”

The group met every other Sunday for two years, critiquing one another’s work, during which time we created a ‘bank’ of plays. The writing done, each writer became his or her own producer in two productions of one-act plays: Beginnings, March 14-April 12, 2012, at the Theatre Asylum Lab, and 7 Corpses, Sept 28-Nov 3, 2012, at The Complex.

Congrats to LAPL member R.J. Colleary on the opening of his new play Happy Face Sad Face, the same story told twice - drama first, comedy second. Preview, Thursday. Press opening, Friday. Opening Night Gala, Saturday. Hope to see you there! Details and link to tix here: https://www.facebook.com/SFaceHFace?fref=ts

Life -- is it a comedy? Or a drama? The answer is "Yes!" HAPPY FACE SAD FACE has a brilliantly simple concept: two one acts... the first is a drama... the second is a comedy... the hook is, they are the same story, told from polar opposite perspective
