The old adage of "they don't make them like they used to" will be on full display at the Vogue on Monday, June 8 at 7 p.m. when Blue Thunder makes its debut on the big screen for June's selection of the Forgotten Movie Club. While it was released in May of 1983, the film has actually never played at the Vogue although it played as part of a double-bill in September of that year at the Chippewa Drive-In.
What a debut it will be as Blue Thunder is one of the most exciting, entertaining, and underrated action films of the 1980s. Directed by journeyman director John Badham, the movie blends action, suspense and political intrigue into a fast-paced story that still feels fresh all these years later. While many action films from that era rely only on explosions and spectacle this film has that while also commenting about surveillance and governmental power.
Frank Murphy (Scheider) is a courageous and honorable Los Angeles police officer who is chosen to test run Blue Thunder, a high-tech experimental attack helicopter. While flying Blue Thunder, Murphy and his partner (Stern) discover that the government intends to use the helicopter for corrupt crowd control and surveillance and they set out to stop them.
Roy Scheider, perhaps one of the most underrated actors of his generation, delivers an excellent performance as Frank Murphy, a troubled but determined Los Angeles police pilot who begins uncovering a dangerous conspiracy. As usual Scheider brings a believable mix of toughness, intelligence, and vulnerability to the role, making Murphy a hero audiences can genuinely root for. Daniel Stern, in one of his earlier co-starring roles, adds humor and energy to the story, while Malcolm McDowell provides a memorable and intimidating antagonist.
The aerial cinematography in Blue Thunder is absolutely spectacular. The helicopter chase scenes are thrilling, expertly filmed, and packed with tension that still holds up today. The movie captures the speed and danger of low-flying aircraft in a way that feels authentic and exhilarating.
For fans of classic action cinema, suspenseful thrillers, or just plain old great big screen filmmaking, Blue Thunder is one entertaining night at the movies you won't want to miss!
