The Environmental Film Festival at Yale (EFFY) is the largest student-run environmental film festival in the world. The festival runs every April and showcases incisive, cutting-edge films that raise awareness of current environmental and social issues. All events are free and open to the public, and include panel discussions with filmmakers, Yale faculty, and special guests.

The Environmental Film Festival at Yale (EFFY) and Yale Planetary Solutions will jointly present winning EFFY short films and Sci X Sci-Fi short stories. These selections bring together speculative, science-forward, and imaginative narratives that explore planetary futures, environmental science, and the role of storytelling in shaping how we understand and respond to global challenges.

​Following a mixed screening and reading, filmmakers and writers will be invited to join a discussion with Sci X Sci-Fi Creatives-in-Residence Stephanie Barish, Founder and CEO of IndieCade, and Tory Stephens, Climate Fiction Creative Manager at Grist, to discuss the importance of telling climate stories through various media to reach broader audiences in climate conversations and inspire action. The dialogue will be moderated by Jennifer Carman, Director of Survey Strategy at the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.

EFFY Night 2 is all about birds and the people who love them. In a ribbon of saltmarsh in coastal New England, an intergenerational group of citizen scientists are trying to save the Saltmarsh Sparrow from extinction, one nest at a time. Decades prior in 1972, married biologists George Hunt and Molly Warner made an unprecedented discovery while studying seagulls on one of California’s Channel Islands. To their surprise, a great number of the nesting pairs they observe are both female. George and Molly’s research on “lesbian seagulls” quickly triggers both outrage and jubilation in a nation grappling with the rise of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. EFFY hosted a screening event for "The White House Effect," featuring a talkback with director Jon Shenk and former EPA Administrator Bill Reilly. Attendees learned how decisive U.S. climate leadership was derailed by industry lobbying, internal White House infighting, and election-year politics. This year, EFFY grew in both scope and spirit. We expanded the festival to five days, showcased nine extraordinary films, and hosted a special panel on climate communication that was later featured in the Yale Daily News. We welcomed filmmakers from across the country to engage with the Yale and New Haven communities. Above all, we celebrated storytelling as a vital tool for advocacy, education, and connection.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, supported, volunteered, and made this festival come to life.

The Environmental Film Festival at Yale is now online!

The 12th Annual Environmental Film Festival at Yale (EFFY) will run online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic rather than our normal programming, which typically includes free public screenings followed by panel discussions with filmmakers, Yale faculty, and special guests. Many of our filmmakers have generously allowed us to screen their films virtually during the quarantine. Select films will be available online from March 31 - April 4, 2020.
