Sidney Lumet once called the car scene between Philip Seymour Hoffman and Marisa Tomei one of the most extraordinary pieces of acting he’d ever witnessed, and it’s easy to see why. Hoffman was one of my all-time favorite actors, and every time I revisit one of his films, I’m reminded how much he’s missed. Such an underrated gem from Lumet.

During the filming of The Hateful Eight, Kurt Russell accidentally smashed a real 1870s Martin guitar on loan from the Martin Museum, not a prop. The moment you see in the film is Jennifer Jason Leigh’s genuine shock, because no one told Russell it was an irreplaceable artifact. The museum later confirmed the guitar was destroyed and vowed never to loan instruments to film productions again. A wild piece of cinema history.

The story, written by Chazz Palminteri, is adapted from his autobiographical one-man play. His real name is Calogero Lorenzo Palminteri. Several studios approached him to purchase the film rights, with at least one offering one million dollars, but Palminteri refused to sell to them unless he could write the screenplay, and play the role of Sonny. None of the studios agreed as they wanted to hire another actor. Then Robert De Niro offered to go into a 50/50 partnership, with all of Palminteri's conditions met, as long as De Niro could direct and play Lorenzo. Palminteri agreed, and their contract was sealed on a handshake.

As an example of how important attention to detail is in movies, graphic designer Annie Atkins stated in interviews that they had created a prop notebook for M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) to use. However, Fiennes immediately noticed that the notebook had no lines in it. After arguing that an organized and meticulous man as his character, M. Gustave, would always prefer lines to write on, the design department got him a notebook with lines. Atkins later stopped using this example when she learned that journalists had completely missed her point, and were instead writing about Fiennes’ alleged diva behavior on the set.

Although he is known as a fashion designer, director Tom Ford chose to leave the costuming in the film strictly to the costume designer. Not a single Tom Ford product appears in the film, as Ford "didn't want a commercial."

Evan Goldberg said Scorsese completely stunned them on set. During a scene where he and Charlize Theron had to whisper, they did nearly ten takes. After they finally got it, Goldberg asked what they were whispering about, and Scorsese admitted he noticed the scene wasn’t being done right, but didn’t want to “backseat direct.”

Demi Moore said she was nervous about filming full nudity at age 59 and felt vulnerable. But she credited co-star Margaret Qualley, who was 29 at the time of filming and portrayed a younger version of her character, with making her feel comfortable on set. Qualley also performed totally naked. Coincidentally, Qualley's mother Andie MacDowell co-starred 40 years earlier with Demi in St. Elmo's Fire (1985), a career-making film for both actresses.
