The Batman (2022)

With recent DC movies really picking up steam over the past few years, Matt Reeves take on the caped crusader is not only extraordinary but puts forward the detective aspect of Batman which wasn’t highlighted that much in the bat’s previous iterations.

The story follows a younger Batman trying to solve multiple murders committed by The Riddler who is looking to expose the corruption among its elite and how it is effecting Gotham. The Bat has to solve all the ridfles to find out not only who the killer is, but also the deep disturbing secrets of Gotham.

What Worked

Right from the casts performance to the epic musical score by Michael Giacchino, everything was near perfect. Robert Pattinson as Batman gave a new layer to the crime fighting vigilante. Zoe Kravitz (Catwoman) & Jeffery Wright (Gordon) gave exemplary performances as well. But the person in my view who steals the show is Colin Farrell as Penguin. He is unrecognisable under that getup. And Matt Reeves direction and storytelling is simply gripping & effective.

What Didn’t Work

Even Pattinson as Batman was phenomenal, but Pattinson as Bruce Wayne was a bit disappointing. It was like batman without the mask. There weren’t layers to the character which I felt could’ve been easily implemented.

Overall, I would recommend everyone to watch this gem even if you’re not into comicbooks or superhero movies.

My final rating is 4.5/5*.

Sardar Udham (2021)

Sardar Udham by Shoojit Sircar is truly one of the finest biopics i have seen in a long time. The biopic covers in detail the 2 decades spent by Udham in planning the assassination of the man responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.

What Worked

The biopic as stated earlier is truly detailed from start to finish. We see how Udham Singh wanted to fight for the freedom of the nation in a different way that he firmly believed would certainly leave a mark. Vicky Kaushal ( )has given career best performance. Through him we see the anger, rage motivation behind Udham Singh’s action. The narration by Shoojit propels the performance to immense heights. The cinematography, visuals, costumes and the score each play an essential part in ensuring that the viewer is taken through the struggle and torment what Udham Singh went through. The Jallianwala Bagh Massacare depiction is one of the most hard-hitting sequence in Indian cinema. Shoojit has captured the horror and pain of the massacre that it will be with you for a long time.

What Didn’t Work

Nothing. A rare cinematic gem where you trying to find a flaw in itself is a hurdle.

Overall a fantastic biopic on a lesser known freedom fighter whose own way of fighting for his nation deserves more attention than a paragraph on a textbook.

My final rating is 4.75/5.

Dune (2021)

Ace filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is back and this time he is directing the adaptation of the highly acclaimed novel Dune by Frank Herbert. A perfect adaptation of the novel has always said to be impossible by many authors, cinema enthusiasts & experts, however i believe this adaptation by Denis is certainly exceptional. The gist of this magnum opus is how the son of a noble family is entrusted with the protection of a dangerous planet and the most valuable asset & vital element known in the galaxy. This first part of a planned trilogy is a great start and has the potential to become an epic cinematic marvel.

What Worked

The performances especially by Timothèe Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson & Jasom Momoa are tremendous. But what steals the show is the visuals & cinematography making this whole world completely unique & stand out. The grand scale & scope of the movie can be genuinely felt. The pacing is also great with no dull moment throughout the runtime. And finally the score by Hans Zimmer again is just phenomenal.

What Didn’t Work

For me having not read the books nor the previous film or series adaptations, i felt some characters were not given much more depth or development. Which I think will be covered in the second part, if that happens.

Overall for me this a great chapter 1 of sorts as it created the world & story perfectly setting up for a sequel, which i hope happens.

My final rating is 4/5.

Major Grom: Plague Doctor (2021)

The film follows Police Officer Igor Grom who is known as an officer to go over and beyond to fight criminals and arrest them. He only works alone & believes that him alone can clean the city better than the whole force combined. But soon he faces a new type of criminal that is going after the rich and those who have in someway affected the citizens of the city. He is called the Plague Doctor. Now Grom has to find a way to stop him before he unleashes his wrath throughout the city.

What Worked

The narrative style is the focal point of the film for me. It is well placed with a really good twist in the second half. The performances are also great, especially of Tikhon Zhiznevskiy as Igor. Technically the film is phenomenal, along with action sequences.

What Didn’t Work

I feel that with such a plot and a great character with the Plague Doctor, more could have been done in terms of his actions and motivations. Plus more development for Igor as could’ve also elevated the film as well.

Overall, a good superhero movie with a familiar plot but with engaging characters & narrative style. Check it out for sure!

My final rating is 3.75/5.

Malik (2021)

The crime-drama by Mahesh Narayan follows the story of Sulaiman’s rise from a small time smuggler to don. While showcasing his journey the film focuses on how political powers play a key role disrupting communities and bringing forth riots & hatred. Sulaiman has been kept in a 14 day remand and Freddy, Sulaiman’s nephew, is handed the task to kill his uncle. His mother and father fuel his rage against his uncle by telling how Sulaiman’s rise led to his father’s and communities downfall. Can freddy kill Sulaiman? or will Sulaiman survive like he has all his life.

What Worked

The narrative style and presentation was simply impeccable. Fahadh Faasil again gave an exceptional performance along with the entire cast as well. I also liked how story of the two communities were told. Showcasing how political factors & motives play a huge part in breaking up communities amd disrupting the peace. The background score, cinematography & editing were all top notch! Special shout to the 12+min track shot in the beginning of the movie, it teally set the tone for on what to expect going forward.

What Didn’t Work

Joju George’s character wasn’t given time to develop. I felt he was just thrown into the setting immediately, with more work on it the whole narrative could have been better.

Overall, Malik is one of the best OTT releases this year, that deserved a theatrical run. The story, setting and performances make this a definite must watch.

My final rating is 4.5/5*.

Nobody (2021)

The movie follows the story of Hutch Mansell, who is overlooked by his family and peers, lives a boring and dull life until one night thieves break into his. To prevent violence he doesn’t do anything and the thieves run off. His son & wife are deeply disappointed by this. The aftermath of the incident forces him to unleash his rage & true self, on the path of which he know faces ruthless drug lord. Now he has to protect his famil & by doing so many secrets of his past start to unravel.

What Worked

Bob Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell was phenomenal. The writing though predictable was still captivating. The action set pieces were also great, along with the cinematography. The pacing of the movie is also good keeping you hooked till the end.

What Didn’t Work

Even though performance of thr Villain was great but it is now tiring to see Russian drug lord or mob as the bad guy of these movies and motivation for the protagonist to fight back. We need more better antagonist so that characters such as Hutch can have more depth and stories can be expanded upon as well.

Overall the movie is a fantastic action/ thriller with get set pieces & performance by Bob Odenkirk.

My final rating is 4/5.
