TONIGHT! 🎧〰️👂We’re welcoming UnionDocs founding partner 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘆 [ JH Linsley ] back to NYC for a very special evening celebrating the publication of 𝘚𝘖𝘕𝘐𝘊 𝘋𝘌𝘛𝘌𝘊𝘛𝘐𝘖𝘕, published by 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 [punctum books ] and created with the late artist and researcher 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘀!

Developed out of a decade-long collaboration between Collins and Linsley, 𝘚𝘖𝘕𝘐𝘊 𝘋𝘌𝘛𝘌𝘊𝘛𝘐𝘖𝘕 travels up and down the UK coast through overheard fragments gathered from a faded seaside resort, a container shipping port, a former coal-mining town, and the Scottish headquarters of the North Sea oil industry.

Part sonic noir, part performance document, and part critical investigation, the project asks what happens when we treat eavesdropping, illicit listening-in, and the accidentally overheard as creative methods. What can we learn by listening at the margins? And what might it mean to become a sonic detective?

For the launch, Linsley will animate the book through a 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘, sounds from the accompanying album 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯 𝘝𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴001, and a conversation about the decade-long project and the possibilities of listening as artistic research. 𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧, 𝗔𝗨𝗚 𝟮𝟭! Join us at DCTV for 𝗧𝗢 𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗔 𝗠𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗡, Casey Carter’s [ Casey Carter ] haunting and visually stunning documentary tracing America’s decades-long search for somewhere to store its nuclear waste. A week long run starts at DCTV!

Moving through the six sites identified by the U.S. Department of Energy for long-term nuclear waste storage in 1982, To Use a Mountain brings physics, geology, politics, and intimate encounters with the people who live among these landscapes together in a gripping radioactive travelogue.

We’re especially thrilled to co-present this one because the film has deep roots at UnionDocs! Director 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 and producer 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗺 [ Colleen Cassingham ] first met through the UnionDocs Collaborative Studio, alongside collaborator 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗢𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮 [ ] who has been part of the project from the start and created the film’s animation. UnionDocs also served as the film’s fiscal sponsor, so it’s incredibly exciting to see the project out in the world and meeting audiences!

Meet visiting guest 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗵! Mariana is a writer and historian of architecture and urbanism, editor in chief of and author of The Invention of Public Space: Designing for Inclusion in Lindsay’s New York.

Mariana will join us for our closing conversation, 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖 𝗩𝗦. 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗘, alongside 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗬𝘂𝗲 and 𝗞. 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘀, to consider the public and private forces that shaped Wiseman’s New York films, and the institutions, systems, and civic spaces they bring into view.

Her recent n+1 essay, 𝘓𝘖𝘖𝘒𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘓𝘐𝘒𝘌 𝘈 𝘚𝘛𝘈𝘛𝘌: 𝘖𝘕 𝘍𝘙𝘌𝘋𝘌𝘙𝘐𝘊𝘒 𝘞𝘐𝘚𝘌𝘔𝘈𝘕, offers a compelling way into these questions. Rather than approaching the people in Wiseman’s films as protagonists moving through conventional personal journeys, Mariana considers how his films reveal individuals through the larger social structures in which they live, and how, as viewers, we become implicated in those structures too.

𝗙𝗥𝗜, 𝗢𝗖𝗧 𝟮 — 𝟳:𝟯𝟬𝗽𝗺

Join us for a special screening and conversation with essay filmmaker 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗻 [Charlie Shackleton], kicking off our upcoming workshop weekend!

We’ll be screening two of Shackleton’s recent films: 𝘊𝘈𝘔𝘌𝘙𝘈 𝘛𝘌𝘚𝘛 (𝘒𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘊𝘈𝘋𝘉𝘜𝘙𝘠), a documentary readymade that turns a routine camera test into an investigation of a mysterious mid-century Cadbury’s commercial preserved in family lore, alongside 𝘡𝘖𝘋𝘐𝘈𝘊 𝘒𝘐𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘙 𝘗𝘙𝘖𝘑𝘌𝘊𝘛, his ingenious account of the true crime documentary he tried and failed to make.

Winner of the NEXT Innovator Award at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, 𝘡𝘖𝘋𝘐𝘈𝘊 𝘒𝘐𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘙 𝘗𝘙𝘖𝘑𝘌𝘊𝘛 reconstructs Shackleton’s unrealized film beat by beat, using vacant Bay Area landscapes, stylized re-enactments and his own wry narration to turn an abandoned project into a playful critique of true crime and its familiar conventions.

Following the screening, Shackleton will join us for a conversation about first-person filmmaking, documentary persona, and what becomes possible when a filmmaker’s own perspective and personality become part of the method.

New workshop alert! 𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡’𝗧 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗪: 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧-𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗠𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚

𝗢𝗖𝗧 𝟮–𝟰, join essay filmmaker 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗻 [ Charlie Shackleton ] for a three-day workshop turning the old documentary mantra “show don’t tell” on its head, and exploring what happens when filmmakers embrace their own personality, perspective, positionality and biases as creative tools.

How might a subjective point of view complicate a film rather than close it down? What can a filmmaker’s sense of humor, cadence of speech, on-screen persona, or performance of the filmmaking process itself reveal about the reality being portrayed?

Across the weekend, we’ll dig into the rich possibilities of first-person cinema, looking beyond films that simply center the filmmaker as subject to consider how personal presence can become part of a film’s methodology. Through screenings, discussion and experimentation, participants will explore subjectivity as a framework for nonfiction, and consider how an unmistakable authorial voice can invite audiences to actively question a film’s authority.

Shackleton will be joined by an incredible lineup of guest filmmakers, each with their own distinctive approach to putting the personal to work on screen: 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿 will discuss the deep entanglement of his personal life and creative practice, and 𝗝𝗼𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗔𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘄 [ Joanna Arnow ] will share how she draws on personal experience to shape her fictional works.

Participants will also have the opportunity to experiment with bringing more of themselves into their own filmmaking, and to share a work-in-progress for constructive group discussion.
