A Friend of Dorothy is the frontrunner to win the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film, according to viewers of the MANHATTAN SHORT Online Film Festival’s sixth annual event.

The short film directed by Lee Knight received more than 50 percent of the votes from the 3,500 participants who experienced the two-week event ending March 4, 2026.

MANHATTAN SHORT Online showcased seven shortlisted titles drawn from the Live Action and Animated categories.

Our first featured finalist is Butterfly (Papillon) by .productions .

Written and directed by Florence Miailhe, it adapts the remarkable real-life story of Alfred Nakache, an early 20th-century Jewish Olympic swimmer who faced tremendous racism at the 1936 Berlin Games, who was later imprisoned at Auschwitz, where he was the only survivor from his family, and eventually returned to compete in the first post-war Olympics in London in 1948.

In 1992, as Colombia faces an era of drug violence, car bombs, and daily power outages, a young mother receives an internship opportunity in New York and eventually must choose between her family and her dreams.

Bogotá Story won multiple awards on last year’s festival circuit, particularly for the best narrative category which is attributed to Esteban’s talent. To stay or to leave is an agonising choice, and his story, inspired by his parents and a brief period shared as a family in Bogotá, is beautifully and meticulously shot by dear friend and director of photography .

Help Market Our Short Films to the Oscars and Win a $1000 Cash!

As part of this week’s MANHATTAN SHORT ONLINE festival (tix now on sale!) we will be re-screening two short films that were part of our annual theatrical event last September; ‘I’m Not A Robot’ and ‘The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent’. These films, alongside ‘The Last Ranger’ screening in this week’s festival, have all been Nominated for Oscars!

You could win a $1000 cash courtesy of MANHATTAN SHORT by simply posting one (or all) of the formatted JPEGS and promoting the film(s) of your choice to your Facebook and/or Instagram accounts (including hashtags) with a message to the voting members of the Academy on why you think this film should win the Oscar.

Please post this weekend as Academy Voting ends Tuesday Feb 18th. If the film you posted wins the Oscar on March 2nd, you’ll go in the draw to win $1000.
