I am a shade among those shades that once
Drank worldly water yet did not quench their thirst.
Disturbing the dream of the living, they return like ghosts
To sip the living water on their stony path.

Like the first boat from an ocean’s depth,
Like a sacrificial jar emerging from a mound,
I’ll mount the stairs till I ascend the step
Whereon your living shadow, awaiting me, is found.
But what if this is falsehood, fairytale?
And what if not a face, but a mask of clay
Peers out at each of us from underground,
With the calcified stones of its tearless eyes?
