In its heyday, it was a vital entertainment spot in the community. Located at 603 Strickland.

Seventy years ago today, the MacArthur Drive-In Theatre opened at 6:30PM. It closed on January 2, 1983.It was an "entertaining" part of Orange's history. It was located at the present site of Home Depot. Lots of great memories there.

Recently, I was in a collectibles shop in Jasper, Texas. Walking around, I spotted an old drive-in speaker in a corner. It looked like speakers that I had seen back in the old days at MacArthur Drive-In. When I picked it up, I noticed that "McArthur Drive-In Theatre" was stenciled on it. Wow. There was no way that I was walking away without it. Projected Sound in Plainfield, Indiana manufactured the speaker. Apparently, the guy stenciling thought it was Mc instead of Mac. By the way, Projected Sound still exists but they don't make drive-in speakers -- not much demand. :-). At any rate, pretty happy about finding this. For now, I'm hanging it on my 1960s Coca-Cola dispenser.

Today is the 63rd anniversary of the opening of the MacArthur Drive-In Theatre in Orange, Texas. That had to be a pretty exciting Friday night in 1950! It stayed open for almost 32 years.

Drive-in theatre with a motel. Cool idea. Best Western Movie Manor in Monte Vista, Colorado.
