Designed by architect Alexander Aimwell Cantin for Donald Rheem in 1941 in a "Modern Baroque" streamline style, the Orinda Theatre has entertained the region and made memories for 84 years. Slated for demolition in 1984, it was saved through the efforts of preservationists and reopened in 1989, when 2 additional screens were added. The original lobby and main theatre were left intact. The murals i

REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM stars a girl who was, in her day, more popular than Zendaya, Justin Bieber, Elvis and The Beatles... combined! That was the world-wide appeal of SHIRLEY TEMPLE. They even named a popular non-alcoholic drink after her still served across the globe today!

She would later become a US ambassador, but her films that made her the most popular girl in the world have been absent from the the BIG screen for several decades. THIS Saturday, at 1 and 7 pm at the Orinda Theatre, you may see one of Shirley Temple's spectacular movies stunningly restored by Disney.

"America's Little Sweetheart," stars in this delightful story, REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM (1938), Shirley's in the care of her over protective aunt. When her singing and dancing catches the eye of a radio talent scout who wants to help her reach the big time. Will her aunt let her?

2 shows only! 1 and 7 pm, Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Randolph Scott, Jack Haley, Gloria Stuart, and dance legend Bill "Bojangles" Robinson enrich this Darryl F. Zanuck 20th Century-Fox production with great songs by Mack Gordon and Harry Revel.
Disney acquired the entire 20th Century-Fox film library in 2019 and began preservation of the collection, with select complete restorations each year.

The Orinda Theatre is proud to offer the Disney restorations series, which continues through December 2026 on the first Saturday of each month, offering the first ever year-long tribute to the work of the WDSMP Restoration and Library Department at any theatre in the USA.
Projection format: DCP, screened by a qualified projectionist from Local 107 of the IATSE.

THE TRAIN stops at Bryant's Station across from the Orinda Theatre on September 27th to let off passengers to see John Frankenheimer's seldomly shown THE TRAIN (1964) with Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield, Jeanne Moreau, Michel Simon and Suzanne Flon. Filled with WWII action and heartfelt drama that questions the value of art in our lives and the fighting to preserve it culturally. In glorious black and white photographed by Jean Tournier and Walter Wottitz, Maurice Jarre offers another memorable film score. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Story and Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

FOOTLIGHT PARADE (1933) depicts a fabulous era of show business when the big movie palaces would offer forty-five min. musical live shows four times a day between feature movies. James Cagney plays the hard boiled producer of these stage prologues, driven to produce three at the same time, offering great songs, the kaleidoscopic patterns of Busby Berkeley's show-stopping musical numbers and a great cast in support. Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, Frank McHugh and of course, that old smoothie, Guy Kibbee, who would appear in-person eight years later at the opening night of the Orinda Theatre, enrich the picture.
Preceded by and presented with selected short subjects that make you re-live going to the Orinda Theatre when it was new.
