THE ODYSSEY in 70mm
Christopher Nolan’s mythic action epic, in 70mm! After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to Ithaca, meeting creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Calypso along the way. GEORGE KUCHAR: COMEDY OF THE UNDERGROUND in 16mm
Legendary filmmaker (George directed over 200 movies), painter, comic artist and actor George Kuchar is the subject of this 1983 documentary by David Hallinger and Gustavo Vasquez.

Before the documentary, the film George is most well known for will play: "Hold Me While I'm Naked" (1966). In the Critics' Poll of the 100 best films of the 20th century, appearing originally in The Village Voice (4 January 2000), Hold Me While I'm Naked was ranked 52nd; do not miss your opportunity to see this and a revealing documentary, all on 16mm.

Director Rustin Thompson in attendance!

Filmmaker Rustin Thompson journeys into the American West on a search for traces of what was once a center of small-town life: the movie theater. On the trip, he finds long abandoned and forgotten cinemas; movie houses that have fallen into disrepair; theaters recently closed, theaters struggling to hold on, and theaters that - thanks to their thoughtful caretakers - are not only surviving but thriving.

Between the stops along the way, Rustin poetically intersperses excerpts from Peter Bogdanovich’s 1971 classic film THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, as well as reflections on past and present hardships facing the film exhibition industry.

The Last Picture Shows is not only a timely portrait of an industry in crisis, one facing the headwinds of consolidation, streaming, and the diminishing theatrical experience, but it also reminds viewers that even in vast cinema deserts, there are oases of community and gathering that remain, where the movie house continues to be a place of wonder, contemplation, and connection.

Today is the first day of the Hollywood Theatre's second century.

One hundred years ago today, on July 17, at exactly 2:00pm, the doors of the Hollywood Theatre opened to the public for the very first time. Audiences were treated to a rotating program featuring screenings of MORE PAY–LESS WORK accompanied by legendary organist Cecil Teague, orchestral interludes conducted by Sam Soble, and a visual splendor unlike anywhere else in the city. The celebration continued until 10:00pm.

Today, we celebrate a century of people coming together at the Hollywood Theatre to experience the magic of film.

We didn't reach this milestone by accident. We reached it because generation after generation of Portlanders chose to care. We reached this moment because of you.

As a special part of our centennial celebration, everyone who makes a gift of $10 or more today, July 17, will be recognized onscreen at the Hollywood Theatre through the end of 2026.

One hundred years ago today, our theatre doors opened for the first time. With your support, they'll stay open for the next hundred years.

We had cake, guests dressed in fun formal wear, and a rare screening of MORE PAY-LESS WORK in 35mm, courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive.

The Grindhouse Film Festival presents this 1973 exploitation classic.

After a few years in the slammer on a drug bust, Goldie (Max Julien) returns to the streets of Oakland, determined to raise himself up in the world. When his old friend turned pr******te Lulu (Carol Speed) asks him to look out for her, Goldie accepts and enters the life of pimping.
