The Garden Theatre is located next door to the Bainbridge house (built in 1766), where the Princeton Historical Society is now located. It's named for the rose garden that once occupied the location. The Garden Theatre opened its doors on September 20, 1920, with a showing of “Civilian Clothes,” starring Thomas Meighan. The event also featured a live orchestra with palms and ferns arranged on the

stage. Originally built to accommodate Princeton University’s Triangle Club, the Garden took on a new life as a cinema when Triangle moved to McCarter Theatre in the late '20s. The Garden changed hands several times in the next few decades. In 1937, the Garden Theatre had its first movie theater competition of the Princeton Playhouse, with a seating capacity of 1,200 (twice the Garden's). The Princeton Playhouse was located only a few blocks away on Palmer Square. Unlike the Playhouse, the Garden specialized in showing foreign films. Sameric Corporation ran the theater from 1975 through 1988, turning the facility into the twin-screen Eric Garden Theatre in 1981. The theater had been dark since October 1992 when United Artists, which had been running the theater since 1988, decided it was no longer financially viable. The Theater Management Corporation, which operates neighborhood theaters throughout the Northeast, began leasing and managing the Garden in 1993, after it was purchased by Princeton University. In 2014, Renew Theaters took over management of the theater; the Pennsylvania-based non-profit also oversees three other historic arthouse cinemas. Sources

Bleak Week will continue on our big screen on June 7th with THE TURIN HORSE! Tickets are available now at princetongardentheatre.org/specials

An austere film, and a hard watch in some respects, Belá Tarr’s The Turin Horse is also extremely rewarding. The film is an oblique take on an anecdote about Nietzsche, which recounts how the philo…

The final film from Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr is a brilliant rumination on death and human existence. Drawing inspiration from German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s rumored mental breakdown after witnessing the whipping of a horse, this fictional period drama details the final days of an aging farmer, his daughter and their horse. Set against a desolate black-and-white landscape and shot in 30 long takes, THE TURIN HORSE is a haunting yet one of a kind cinematic experience. In Hungarian and German w/ subtitles.

This summer we’re celebrating 100 years of Mel Brooks! The mini retrospective will showcase SPACEBALLS on June 30th at 7pm. Tickets are available now at princetongardentheatre.org/specials

In a distant galaxy, a renegade space pilot (Bill Pullman) and his trusty half-dog, half-man sidekick (John Candy) must save a princess (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil clutches of the Spaceballs, led by President Skroob (Mel Brooks) and the dastardly Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis). This Mel Brooks cult space comedy is endlessly quotable and parodies films from Star Wars (“May the Schwartz be with you”) to 2001: A Space Odyssey to Alien.

The Bogart film of all Bogart films, with nightclub owner Rick fighting his cynicism to choose between love and duty. Set in Morocco during WWII, this classic contains one memorable scene after another, only to be topped by one of the greatest endings ever. Co-star Ingrid Bergman simply glows on the screen.

Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder star as Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his accountant, who figure out how to make a profit by creating a surefire flop. Their idea: a musical called Springtime for Hi**er. With laugh-out-loud comedic performances, Brooks’ enduring film is widely considered one of the greatest comedies of all time.

About the movie:YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is Mel Brook’s comedic take on the Universal monster classics of the ‘30s-’40s. The story follows an American struggling to disassociate himself from the legacy of his grandfather, the infamous scientist, Victor Frankenstein. When he travels to Transylvania, however, the discovery of Victor’s journals leads him to take up where his grandfather left off. 50 years later this silly spoof still endures with its wit, quotable one-liners, hilarious supporting cast, and an all-time best performance from Wilder.

On Saturday, June 6th, Bleak Week continues with a screening of MIRACLE MILE. Tickets are available now at princetongardentheatre.org/specials

Its opening as a sweet romantic comedy about a musician (Anthony Edwards) who falls for a waitress (Mare Winningham) at a Los Angeles diner, is barely a fraction of the pitch-perfect setup for what’s to follow. After the musician receives a chance phone call in the dead of night, the plot of MIRACLE MILE turns into a nightmarish scenario that plays out in real time. To spoil anymore would surely do this film a great disservice.
