Chambana Film Society The 2026 Savoy Lumière
April 29-May 5 • May 8, 15, 22 - Savoy 16 + IMAX

05/23/2026

Thanks to everyone that came out to any of the Savoy Lumière screenings, and everyone that pitched in to help with everything. This was the best time I've had with one of my festivals in at least 15 years. I'll be back with a June newsletter soon, but probably won't have announcements about CineSonic screenings until mid-June.

See you then!

The Savoy Lumière finally ends Friday night! We've got Maybe It's This at 6pm, and at 7pm we have Tight & Nerdy - The Weird Al Burlesque Movie. Both of these films have 30 minute Q&As scheduled afterwards.

After that is A Draglesque Finale to the Savoy Lumière!

Thanks so much to Smile Politely for the coverage in the Weekender. I can't say for sure that the films are going to sell out, but if they follow the same trend of pre-sales vs. walkups as we usually see, it definitely will!

Fuel up on Green Street for this long weekend. Then head to see film and live music, learn to play a game, and get outside.

Almost $300 just to see a movie! Just come see our movies instead!

Last night's screening of Nuisance Bear was plagued by tech problems. I have triple checked a new copy of the file, and if someone coming to The Chrisophers tonight can look over my shoulder before the 7pm show, and tell me exactly where the sound cut out, we will show the ending after our 7pm shows tonight and tomorrow night.

Still waiting for final confirmation, but we will probably be showing the entire thing again NEXT TUESDAY, May 12th at 7pm. Everyone was LOVING it last night, so make sure you don't miss this!

The Christophers is a recent black comedy directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, Out of Sight, Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Magic Mike, and many more). The film stars legendary stage and screen actor Ian McKellen alongside Michaela Coel, best known for creating and starring in HBO’s I May Destroy You.

McKellen plays Julian Sklar, an aging painter whose family hires a new assistant to care for him. Unbeknownst to Julian, she is actually a skilled art restorer. Fearing that Julian will pass away without producing new work to sell, his family secretly tasks her with locating his unfinished paintings and completing them—effectively forging new pieces to secure their inheritance.

The Christophers premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and was released in April by Neon, but it never screened in Champaign County. The film currently holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 3.5 average on Letterboxd.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see The Christophers on the big screen—and to support bringing more mid-budget, artist-driven films to the CU community.

Exit 8
In Japanese with English subtitles.

A quick glance at the history of films based on video games shows a pretty consistent pattern: most of them are… not great. But Exit 8 is anything but typical. In fact, it may be the strongest video game adaptation ever made—and it’s possibly the only one to screen at the Cannes Film Festival.

The original game is built on a deceptively simple idea: you walk through a subway corridor, carefully observing every detail. In the next corridor, something might be off—a flickering light, a shifted door, a poster whose eyes seem to follow you. If everything looks normal, you keep moving forward. If something feels wrong, you turn back… only to find yourself progressing anyway. Reach Corridor 8, and you escape. Miss something, and the loop continues.

The film expands this minimalist concept into something far more layered and cinematic. It stays true to the eerie, observational tension of the game while building out a richer narrative filled with psychological twists and mounting dread. The result is a gripping, PG-13 thriller that manages to feel both faithful and entirely fresh.

With a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Exit 8 proves that video game adaptations don’t have to be hollow spectacle—they can be thoughtful, unsettling, and genuinely compelling.

Don’t miss your chance to see it on the big screen—and to support more mid-budget, artist-driven films coming to the CU community.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS!

I’ve got a couple hours before I basically disappear into the Savoy 16 + IMAX for the weekend. If you need anything, your best bet is to TEXT the number listed on our About page.

I wanted to get a few updates out before things get hectic—please excuse the rushed writing.

I’m told (by marketing people… I know) that it helps to “build a narrative,” so here you go:

a) The schedule—having a full week plus three random Fridays—was always a little awkward. So we’ve added screenings on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

b) While Savoy Lumière is known for independent film, we’re not opposed to mixing things up. These two additions include the most recognizable actor/director pairing we’ve shown yet, plus a slick Japanese psychological thriller.

Both films are distributed in the U.S. by NEON (Parasite, Anora, and the last SIX Palme d’Or winners—so yeah, they know what they’re doing).

• The Christophers, starting Ian McKellen, and directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's 11, Magic Mike, dozens of others) — Wednesday, May 6th at 7:00pm
• Exit 8, a psychological thriller about a man trapped in a subway station — Thursday, May 7th at 7:00pm

2) There's been some changes with our closing night, Friday, May 22nd. We are adding a short film at 6pm, under a single ticket price with Tight & Nerdy, and we have information on the post-screening burlesque show. The new schedule is:

6:00pm – Maybe It’s This screening
6:30pm – Maybe It’s This Q&A with filmmakers and subjects
7:00pm – Tight & Nerdy screening
8:30pm – Tight & Nerdy Zoom Q&A with filmmakers.

9:30pm – A Draglesque Finale to the Savoy Lumière )Lumière After Dark: The Weird R***e) (requires additional ticket).

See you at the movies!
