We close out our Kurt & Jodie double feature series this Saturday, July 11th, with two films about nasty people in close quarters sizing each other up.

First is Quentin Tarantino’s epic 70mm Western chamber piece, The Hateful Eight (2pm), which stars Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson as bounty hunters who meet up in a snowy forest and must then hole up together in a refuge from the blizzard with a number of bad hombres.

We pair Tarantino’s 187-minute epic road show with Roman Polanski’s 80-minute adaptation of French playwright Yasmina Reza’s acclaimed stage play, Carnage in 35mm (6:15pm). In the film, two sets of parents in a tony part of Brooklyn, played by Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly and by Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz, come together to settle a dispute. As the evening progresses, these two mature, liberal, fair-minded couples become increasingly childish, and their meeting devolves into chaos.

Opening Friday: Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity S*x Pass

Small town hairdresser Gail Daughtry is engaged to her devoted high school sweetheart, Tom. Her life takes a turn when a trip to a book signing leads to Tom meeting – and sleeping – with his “celebrity pass”. Reeling from the betrayal, Gail impulsively joins her friend Otto on a trip to Los Angeles, where a psychic convinces Gail that the only way to save her marriage is to “even the scales” with her own celebrity pass: Jon Hamm. Thus begins an epic journey through Tinseltown as Gail and Otto join forces with a talent agency assistant, a paparazzo, and actor John Slattery, all in the search for Hamm.

Our next Kurt and Jodie pairing is Overboard in 35mm (6:30pm) and Sommersby (8:45pm), screening on Monday, July 6th.

This double feature about deceitful spouses kicks off with one of the best-loved films Kurt Russell made with his longtime life partner Goldie Hawn.

In Overboard, Hawn plays a wealthy socialite whose arrogant and demeaning attitude—especially towards the local carpenter she hires to redesign her closet—gets her into hot water when she falls off her yacht and develops amnesia.

He goes to the hospital claiming that she is his wife and the mother of his four unkempt, rebellious boys. Helmed by Garry Marshall, the film’s problematic premise results in a delightful, funny comedy buoyed by the real-life chemistry of its two excellent leads.

We pair Overboard with Sommersby, where Jodie Foster and Richard Gere made this more serious take on the premise of a woman falling in love with a man who claims to be her husband.

Gere plays a Confederate officer returning to his rural community after years away fighting. While at first many aren’t sure if he’s the man he claims to be, most soon come to accept him as John Robert “Jack” Sommersby after his wife Laurel does.
