17th July 1959, Billie Holiday died in a New York City hospital from cirrhosis of the liver after years of alcohol abuse, aged 43. (While under arrest for he**in possession, with Police officers stationed at the door to her room.) In the final years of her life, she had been progressively swindled out of her earnings, and she died with $0.70 in the bank. This Day in History:
1931--The Rodgers and Hart musical satire of Hollywood, "America's Sweetheart" premiered at Broadway's Broadhurst Theater.
1942--"Chatanooga Choo-Choo" by the Glenn Miller Orchestra became the first recording to be awarded a gold record. It was actually a real copy of the disc spraypainted gold!
1958--Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me" begins its five-week run as Number 1 on the US Album chart.
1962--Henry Mancini reaches Number 1 on the album chart with the soundtrack album to "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
