Chopping Mall - MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 AT 8:00PM

Flashback to a time of rubber monsters and unhinged lunacy at MONDO ’86, featuring 40th anniversary screenings of some of 1986’s wildest and most Mondo-riffic horror flicks that made the decade, like, totally awesome!

“Where shopping can cost you an arm and a leg!” A bunch of fun-loving teens are about to learn what “shop till you drop” really means when their after-hours party at the local shopping mall is crashed by murderously malfunctioning robots who have been programmed to drill, kill and spill (blood, that is!), in this deliriously entertaining B-movie horror classic! In Chopping Mall (aka Killbots), a gaggle of ‘80s exploitation faves including Kelli Maroney (Night of the Comet), Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator) and Russell Todd (Friday the 13th Part II) try to survive a night in the Park Plaza Mall when the building’s state-of-the-art security devices (aka ROBOTS!) are accidentally turned into automated killing machines thanks to an electrical short circuit that makes them want to turn h***y teenage party animals into food court roadkill! Let the s*x, shopping and exploding heads begin! If the sight of wobbly, rampaging robots on wheels firing deadly laser beams at frantic actors as they race through the Sherman Oaks Galleria (the same mall immortalized in Fast Times at Ridgemont High) doesn’t get your “bad movie juices” flowing, then perhaps nothing ever will. A glorious double-cheese pizza of a movie from the director of Dinosaur Island and The Return of Swamp Thing!

(Dir. by Jim Wynorksi, 1986, 97 mins., Rated R)

Big Trouble in Little China - Cult Classics / 40th Anniversary!

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6

John Carpenter’s colorful, kooky, ‘everything-but-the-kitchen-sink’ supernatural kung fu fantasy comedy action flick is an uproariously rampaging adventure in the grand tradition of 1930s cliffhanger serials. Reuniting the director with his charismatic good luck charm from Escape from New York and The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China stars Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, a cocky truck driver prone to John Wayne posturing who finds himself in over his head as he battles ancient Chinese warlords and hideous demons to save feisty damsel in distress Kim Cattrall. As he races through the mean catacombs beneath Chinatown, Jack and his ragtag band of rescuers encounter literally every obstacle imaginable: devil women, water torture, deadly ninjas, fire breathing ghosts, black magic monsters … well, you get the picture. Directing in high pulp comic book style, Carpenter proves himself a masterful genre mechanic, fashioning one of his most purely entertaining films out of discarded remnants from the pop culture junk pile, in the process creating a true cult classic that never slows down long enough to wear out its welcome.

(Dir. by John Carpenter, USA, 1986, 99 mins., Rated PG-13)

The Battle of Algiers - 60th Anniversary!

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 AT 7:00PM

Co-presented by UA School of Government and Public Policy

Don’t miss this big screen presentation of the 1966 Oscar-nominated classic THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS, co-presented by UA School of Government and Public Policy as a kick-off for their campus film series, Resistance on Screen: Film, Politics, and the Struggle for Justice. Featuring a post-film Q&A with UA School of Government and Public Policy Professors Dr. Carolyn Barnett and Dr. Kirssa Cline Ryckman!

One of the most influential political films in history, The Battle of Algiers, from director Gillo Pontecorvo, vividly re-creates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s. As violence escalates on both sides, children shoot soldiers at point-blank range, women plant bombs in cafés, and French soldiers resort to torture to break the will of the insurgents. Shot on the streets of Algiers in documentary style, the film is a case study in modern warfare, with its terrorist attacks and the brutal techniques used to combat them. Pontecorvo’s tour de force has astonishing relevance today. Nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

(Dir. by Gillo Pontecorvo, 1966, Italy/Algeria, in French/Arabic with English subtitles, 121 mins., Not Rated)
