These are window cards that once hung in the foyer of Smalley’s Walton Theatre! They appear to be from the 1950s, including the iconic Walt Disney’s Cinderella in ✨Technicolor✨ and heartthrobs Clark Gable and Maureen O’Hara. Do you remember seeing any of these films, shorts, or comedies at the theatre?

And check out those ticket prices…😅

Big thank you to Traci for sharing these memorabilia, and her note, “I love the history they represent. I’ve been following your progress on the complete renovation of the theater. Another historical building lovingly restored, rather than demolished. Kudos to all who contributed. I wish every town had taken the time to lovingly restore a treasure such as the Walton Theatre. What a wonderful world it would be!” We ❤️ getting emails like these!

The Walton Theatre shares its 1914 building with Village of Walton NY Hall, and in the past also shared it with the Walton Fire Department. On the North Street side of the building, the bay doors have been covered by a windowed façade and left- and right-side bay doors have been replaced by a window and main entry door, respectively. Prior to the 1914 theatre, the Walton Opera Hall also shared its building with the fire house where the Theatre stands today, during which time the bell was originally cast and hung in the tower.

The fire house’s history rings on, however, as the tower’s bell still strikes noon daily. Once used to call in the firemen, the bell is now a functioning piece of art and history having survived a devastating fire in 1912 to rise from the ashes restored to glory.

Can you find this poem on the exterior of the theatre?

I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

“Trees” by Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918)

In memory of Gertrude Welanetz Heiselman (1910- 1982)

The Walton Theatre Preservation Association is a group of volunteers who are dedicated to ensuring the preservation and continuation of the Walton Theatre as a cultural and historical icon. In 1984 the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places, and on April 21, 1986, some 72 years after its opening, then-mayor Raymond Baldi established the Walton Restoration Committee to oversee the restoring of the theatre to its former glory. This committee became what is known today as the Walton Theatre Preservation Association (WTPA).

WTPA’s most recent large-scale project was upgrading the theatre’s aging stage lighting system to motorized LED lights. This much-needed modernization has improved safety and efficiency while also increasing lighting capabilities. If you’ve attended a Music On The Delaware live show on the mainstage since fall 2025, you have witnessed the lights in action.

We are grateful for community contributions, and it is only through the community's support that we have some so far. THANK YOU. To support these and future projects, please consider donating to the Walton Theatre Preservation Association online at https://www.waltontheatre.org/ - link in bio – or by mail to Walton Theatre Preservation Association, PO Box 1, Walton, NY 13856.
