My stepmother destroyed my late mother’s prom dress that I planned to wear in her honor — but she never expected my father to teach her a lesson.
I’m 17 years old, and the most important night of my school years had finally arrived: prom.
All my life, I had dreamed of wearing my mom’s dress — the same dress she wore to her own prom.
When I was only 12, cancer took her away from me. She was everything to me.
There was no other dress I wanted to wear. I wanted to wear it in her memory, and I knew how much my mom had dreamed of seeing me at my own prom.
Years later, my dad remarried. His new wife, Stephanie, cared more about appearances than anything else.
She threw away my mom’s belongings, calling them “junk,” and replaced them with expensive furniture and flashy decorations.
The day before prom, I stood in front of the mirror, admiring myself in my mom’s dress as I carefully prepared it for the next day.
Stephanie walked in, smiled, and said:
“You can’t wear that rag! You’ll embarrass our family. YOU’LL WEAR THE DESIGNER DRESS I PICKED OUT — THE ONE THAT COST THOUSANDS!”
But I didn’t back down.
“This dress is special to me. I’m wearing it,” I told her.
The next day, just before prom, I went to change.
I reached for the garment bag, unzipped it…
And froze.
My dress was destroyed.
The seams had been ripped apart, and the satin was covered in stains, as if someone had deliberately poured coffee on it.
Then Stephanie appeared in the doorway with a smile on her face.
“Oh, you found it!”
“Did you do this? This is my mother’s dress… how could you?” I shouted, fighting back tears.
Stephanie rolled her eyes.
“I’m your mother now! Enough! YOU SHOULD HAVE THROWN THAT DRESS IN THE TRASH A LONG TIME AGO!”
My hands were shaking.
I stood there completely broken, not knowing what to do next.
But moments later, my father made Stephanie regret everything she had done. ⬇️ See less

We lost our son Owen when he was five.

He had a heart condition no one caught until it was too late. One quiet Tuesday morning, he did not wake up.

His favorite color was blue. Not a soft blue. The bright, wild, sky-in-summer kind of blue.

So on his birthday every year, my husband Caleb and I stood in our backyard with our daughter Piper and released a bundle of blue balloons into the sky. We wrote messages on the ribbons. We told him about the puppy. About Piper's first day of kindergarten. About Grandpa's new fishing boat.

The balloons always drifted east, over the woods behind our house, and disappeared.

Last month was the fifth anniversary of Owen's passing. He would have been ten.

We released twelve balloons that morning. Piper wrote "I miss you, big brother" on one of the ribbons in green marker.

That afternoon, Piper was playing on the swing set when she started screaming for me.

I ran outside.

She was pointing straight up.

One blue balloon was drifting back down toward our yard. Slowly. Gently. Almost like it was aiming.

Tied to the ribbon was a folded piece of paper.

I caught it just before it hit the grass.

I untied the paper with trembling fingers.

It was a child's drawing. A little boy with brown hair, holding hands with a stick figure that had a green marker heart drawn over its chest.

At the bottom, in careful crayon letters, three words:

"He found me."

I dropped to my knees in the grass.

My husband and I divorced after 36 years—then at his funeral, his dad had too much to drink and said, "YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HE DID FOR YOU, DO YOU?"
I'd known Troy since we were five. Our families lived next door, so we grew up together—same yard, same school, same everything. We got married at twenty, and for most of our lives, it felt easy. Two kids, a girl and a boy, both grown now. A steady, normal marriage.
Then, in our thirty-fifth year, large amounts of money started disappearing from our joint account.
I only noticed because our son sent me some money and I went to move it into savings. The balance didn't make sense. Thousands gone. Then more. Like someone had been quietly draining us.
When I asked Troy, he gave me a different excuse every time. "Bills." "Something for the house." "I moved it around, it'll come back." It never did.
A week later, I opened his desk drawer looking for the battery for the remote and found hotel receipts tucked under papers. Same hotel. Same city. Same room number.
My stomach flipped. I called the hotel, pretended I was my husband's assistant, and asked for the same room under his name—the one he'd stayed in last time.
The concierge didn't even hesitate.
"Of course," he said. "He's a regular. That room is basically reserved for him."
When Troy came home, I put the receipts on the table and demanded an explanation. He didn't deny it, but he wouldn't explain it either. Just stared at me like I was the problem.
I couldn't live inside that kind of lie.
So after 36 years, we divorced.
Two years later, he died suddenly.
At his funeral, his 81-year-old father stumbled up to me, reeking of whiskey. His eyes were red, his voice thick.
He leaned in and slurred, "YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HE DID FOR YOU, DO YOU?" ⬇️ See less
