Prompted by U.S. Census data indicating the need for 200 new homes by 2030, the Lower Sioux Housing Authority turned to hempcrete.

Ancient Romans created a special concrete that actually heals its own cracks, letting monuments like the Colosseum endure for two millennia. 🤔

This incredible material, known as opus caementicium, was far more advanced than any mortar that came before it.

The Romans mixed volcanic ash, called pozzolana, with lime and aggregates like pieces of rock and brick rubble.

This mixture created what is known as a hydraulic cement, which meant it could set and harden even when completely submerged in water.

For centuries, the full reason for its amazing durability remained a mystery. But a 2023 study from MIT finally cracked the code.

The secret wasn't just the ash, but how the Romans prepared the lime. They used a 'hot-mixing' method with quicklime, a more volatile and reactive form.

This process created tiny, brittle pockets of lime within the concrete. When cracks formed and water seeped in, it would react with these pockets, forming new calcium carbonate crystals that sealed the crack from the inside.

This self-healing property is why structures like the Pantheon, with its massive unsupported dome, have withstood earthquakes and the elements for over 2,000 years. 🏛️

Their engineering was so advanced that the recipe was lost for centuries after the fall of Rome, and modern concrete has only recently begun to catch up.
