Located in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem, a/perture revived the

theatrical experience in the central business district. Over the past eleven years, a/perture has become a space to enjoy and celebrate art on film while fostering social capital and shared experiences. a/perture provides the community a home for more than 4,000 film screenings and events per year. a/perture’s mission is to engage and entertain the community through the art of film by showcasing informative, educational, thought-provoking and inspiring films – films that enrich lives, engage minds, promote diversity and build community.

Calling all parents and high school students 🗣️ We still have a few spots left in our film a/ppreciation summer camp for rising grades 10-12 🍿

This five-day camp give students an in-depth look at each aspect of the filmmaking process through film screenings and discussions.

With a curriculum designed by a/perture’s curator and programming director, Jake Laystrom, each day will focus on a specific artist and each film will be preceded by an introduction and followed by a group discussion, specifically highlighting each day’s focus and each artist’s styles and signatures.

By exploring film history and film theory through individual disciplines in the filmmaking process, campers will gain a better understanding of the images they consume, and why certain choices were made to bring these stories to life. With a strong foundation here, campers will have a head start in their future careers as filmmakers, critics, programmers, and most importantly, movie lovers.

Sample films that may be viewed include ⬇️

➡️ The Big Lebowski
➡️ Days of Heaven
➡️ Rashomon
➡️ Raising Arizona
➡️ Paris, Texas

For the first time in theaters, see Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s CHIME, previously only released as an NFT in 2024, followed by a restoration of his under-seen 1998 film SERPENT’S PATH

A masterclass in escalating dread and shocking violence, CHIME reaffirms Kiyoshi Kurosawa as one of modern horror’s most innovative and unpredictable visionaries. During a class, culinary instructor Matsuoka (Mutsuo Yoshioka) witnesses the su***de of a young student (Seiichi Kohinata), driven to insanity by what he claims is a chiming sound that controls his mind. Soon, Matsuoka begins hearing it, too, and descends into a mental abyss that warps his perception of reality and gives vent to his darkest impulses. Expertly blending psychological portraiture and hallucinatory mystery, Kurosawa offers a chilling depiction of madness that interrogates the very stability of our everyday existence.

SERPENT'S PATH is a new 4K Restoration after Kurosawa's international breakthrough with STRAIGHT OFF CURE in 1997. The film is a dark gangland thriller with philopsophical overtones and is one of the legendary director's most chilling investigations into the endless cycle of violence and evil that lodges in every art.
