Mirzapur: The Movie Review

Can Mirzapur step onto the big screen and live up to the legacy of the series? You bet!

For me, Mirzapur is the greatest Indian digital series ever made. Since its debut on Amazon Prime Video in 2018, I have watched the show religiously and become completely invested in its characters, its madness and the world that Excel Entertainment created.

So when the idea of taking this world to the big screen was announced, bringing back some of the characters we had fallen in love with, the excitement was always going to be immense.

And Mirzapur: The Movie is exactly what a companion piece should be.

Set between Episodes 6 and 7 of Season One, the film cleverly finds an entirely new mission within a timeline that fans already know.

That means we get to see some of our favourite characters back in their old avatars, including characters who have long since disappeared from the series. For a fan, that alone is a massive win.

The return of Munna Bhaiya is undoubtedly one of the biggest highlights. After his absence from the final season, seeing him back on screen brings a feeling that is difficult to explain.

Divyenndu slips straight back into the role, while Kaleen Bhaiya remains the king of Mirzapur and Guddu Pandit is as brilliant as ever.

Seeing these characters together again is pure fan service — and I mean that in the best possible way.

What impressed me most, though, is that the makers haven't simply made a nostalgia trip. There is a genuine new story here, with unexpected tracks coming to life and some characters getting more depth and backstory.

Beena's track was fantastic, while Mohit Malik as Birju Lohar was outstanding. The way his character is introduced and gradually becomes part of the larger story was particularly impressive.

The music is another major plus. Madhur Sharma makes his Bollywood debut with “Saanson Ki Mala,” a recreation of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan qawwali, and the way the song is used in the film gave me proper goosebumps.

The biggest challenge with a story set between two existing episodes is also something the film cannot completely escape. Without giving anything away, there is an element of predictability because we already know where these characters have to be afterwards. When a familiar character finds themselves in serious danger, you know they're going to make it out. It does take a little bit of tension away from certain moments.

But honestly, what else could the makers have done? This is the reality of creating a companion story within an established timeline; and I don't think it takes away from the overall experience.

The film does take a little while to get going and, at over three hours, the runtime can feel excessive in places. Perhaps this could have been another season or even split into two parts. But once it gets going, Mirzapur feels like proper cinema.

The action is bigger, louder and wonderfully massy; and seeing this world on the big screen gives it an entirely different energy. And yes, those post-credit scenes gave me proper goosebumps.

The Verdict:

Mirzapur: The Movie is a fantastic companion piece to one of my favourite shows of all time.

If you haven't watched the series, the film does enough to help you understand what's happening, although the character-building and exposition may make the opening feel slower. But if you're a fan, this is exactly the kind of experience you've been waiting for.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is going to be a box-office monster. Like me, there are countless fans who absolutely love the Mirzapur world, and I can already imagine audiences flocking to cinemas just to see band of characters back together again.

Mirzapur has always been about larger-than-life characters, unforgettable dialogues, brutal action and a world unlike anything else on Indian television or streaming.

Now, that world belongs on the big screen too.

Movie Review: Awarapan 2

I tried my best not to cry; I failed.

When they say “Akkha Bollywood ek taraf, Emraan Hashmi ek taraf” — “All of Bollywood on one side, Emraan Hashmi on the other” — they’re never exaggerating.

Cinema may be catering to a new generation, but 19 years on, the goosebumps this man gives us remain unchanged.

I waited a really long time for Awarapan 2. It was my most anticipated film of the year; and I wasn't expectant, I was anticipatory.

Because the wait was so long, I was ready for whatever the makers had in store for us.

And then the film opened with Mustafa Zahid's rendition of Toh Phir Aao. The goosebumps didn't need time to set in.

That alone tells you what Awarapan 2 means to fans of the original. Yes, there is nostalgia here. Yes, there is fan service. But what's wrong with that? Aren't films ultimately made for their audiences?

This isn't a perfectly made film. The storyline is fairly predictable, the interval block doesn't quite deliver the punch you might expect and the action can feel excessive at times.

I also found myself wishing there was more romance between Emraan and Disha Patani, although I understand how giving that relationship too much space could have interfered with Shivam's character arc.

But then comes that ending. I won't say a word about it. I will say that I cried.

It manages to sum up the purpose of these characters while remaining completely true to Shivam and, most importantly, his heart.

Whichever way the story went, that ending had the ability to touch viewers. Somehow, it touched us even more.

And then there is Emraan.

He runs the show. He steals the show. He is Shivam.

All these years later, he seeps straight back into a character that feels like it never really left him. The persona, the intensity, the vulnerability — the man is back.

Disha Patani is great alongside him, with good chemistry and a look that fits the world beautifully. The supporting cast are effective, with Puran Gabbi bringing mad scientist vibes as the crazy villain and Shabana Azmi looking deadly in an albeit small role.

The music brings the soul. Tera Mera Rishta remains timeless, and when that chorus hits, the goosebumps return all over again. The original tracks work well too, giving the film a musical identity that feels connected to its predecessor without simply living in its shadow.

There is definitely a part of me that wanted more from the romance, but perhaps Awarapan 2 understood that Shivam's journey couldn't be built around that alone.

The film may not be perfect, but it reminded me why I fell in love with this character — and with Emraan Hashmi — in the first place.

And just when we thought it was over, he's back.

I'm in awe.

Bring on Jannat 3. Bring on Awarapan 3. I'm ready.
