In 2019 we are holding our Square Dance introduction classes on Fridays May 17th, 24th and 30th at Jannali. Welcome to Knee-Deep Squares! We hope you enjoy our page. Square dancing is alive! Some people think of square dancing as a hillbilly craze of the 1950's, but nothing could be further from the truth. Gone are the hay bails, calico petticoats, checked shirts, cowboy hats and overalls
. The dress style is still "western", but the ladies now wear comfortable circular skirts or dresses with soft petticoats, and the men wear smart western shirts and trousers. Square dancing has changed with the times and is now a modern social activity set to great music (not just country & western, but also a contemporary modern sound). You will hear great songs from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and today - movie themes, stage musicals, Beatles, Elton John and Elvis are all part of the musical repertoire of square dancing. Square dancing is also good physical and mental exercise and is endorsed by the National Heart Foundation. If you want to find out where to try square dancing in your area, you can usually find information on the national Square Dance Australia web site. The wonderful activity of square dancing is truly a global phenomenon. You can square dance in many countries that you visit. The great thing is that you don't even have to speak the language of that country, as square dances are called in a universal language wherever you go. It doesn't matter where you learn to square dance, you will have friends all around the world. There are many interesting web sites about square dancing that you can visit on the net.
