unrooted is a multimedia project by Oli Gots Oli Gots exploring identity, belonging and ancestral roots through the personal histories of Bulgaria and Ukraine and the legacy of the Soviet Union.

Drawing on migration, family memories and fragmented histories, the project explores what remains when cultural, ethnic and national identities are suppressed in favour of imposed sameness, while examining language as a tool of belonging, cultural heritage and colonial practice.

For unrooted, Gots focuses on places that are absent, forgotten or impossible to return to. Flowers and vegetation become visual metaphors for these lost or displaced places, appearing as torn, dried, scanned and transformed remnants.

The London presentation at Phoenix Cinema is a site-specific interpretation of the original installation in Sofia, combining textile prints, scanography and text-based work.

Alongside unrooted, a selection of illustrations exploring self-care, nature/nurture and womanhood will be displayed outside Screen 2. These works are available to purchase as print-on-demand editions from 5 September – 4 October via cooltsalon.com/pop-up-shop.

What does it mean to inherit a love of cinema?

In Episode 6 of Phoenix Portraits, we meet Adi Cooper — whose parents, Charles and Kitty Cooper, played an important part in the Phoenix’s history. Adi reflects on growing up surrounded by cinema, her parents’ legacy, and what it means to carry that connection forward through her own work.

She also tells us about C75, celebrating 75 years of Contemporary Films and bringing together a selection of films from its remarkable history alongside its contemporary programme.

SUPER NATURE + DIRECTOR Q&A - 5th SEPTEMBER @ 2PM

We welcome Ed Sayers to the Phoenix for a live discussion of his debut feature - a super charged nature documentary that celebrates our universal connection to the natural environment with an intimate gaze, creating a visceral, poetic personal meditation on the natural world.

What makes this film unique? Ed collaborated with 40 people on 80 different antique Super 8 cameras across land, in the air, and underwater. They would all decide together the stories of nature close to them and their hearts that they would tell, all with as little travel as possible.

By being filmed exclusively on Super 8, Super Nature proposes a new way of seeing. A celebration of all we have and reflecting on all we have to lose… The result is a fresh perspective on the most pressing subject of our time.
