Coming Soon • For his pre-determined directorial swan song, cult filmmaker Alex Cox (REPO MAN, STRAIGHT TO HELL) returns to Almaría for a loose adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s 1842 novel of the same name, reimagined as a frontier fable of American greed. The Western fits Cox as snugly as the black bowler hat he wears throughout DEAD SOULS, starring as the mysterious drifter Strindler (or is it ‘Swindler’?). Pistol duels and crooked officials abound, and spaghetti Western legend Gianni Garko claims a co-writer credit. But Cox’s idiosyncrasy stands out as the film veers tonally through the picaresque, with dark satire and genre curveballs you won’t expect. (adapted from notes by IFFR)

The Brattle is taking a short intermission. We will be closed July 21–30 while we give our beloved theater some well-deserved care.

During the break, we are refreshing our floors, laying new carpets, and adding new aisle lighting to make your next visit even better. The screen may go dark for a few days, but it is all in service of the character-filled space you know.

Coming Soon • Small-time mobster Nicky (John Cassavetes) is holed up in a fleabag motel after finding out the boss he stole money from has put a hit out on him. Terrified and with nowhere to run, he calls on Mikey (Peter Falk), his oldest friend and the one person he thinks can save him. But does Mikey actually want to help Nicky this time, or is he merely leading him to his doom?
