Kane Parsons is 20 years old and A24's youngest director ever. He built the Backrooms mythology on YouTube at 16 with zero budget — no crew, no studio, just a camera and an edit bay. That video series got millions of views and caught the attention of A24, who handed him a $10 million budget and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Backrooms opens May 29 and is tracking $31 million opening weekend. If it hits, Parsons becomes the youngest director ever to open a film at number one. The playbook hasn't changed: build the audience first, then let the industry come to you.

Kane Parsons had accumulated approximately 78 million YouTube views on his original Backrooms video when A24 approached him about a feature film. He had no produced screenwriting credits at the time of the greenlight. A24 committed to theatrically distributing the film before a completed script existed. Parsons directed the film at 20.

The Backrooms opened wide in theaters today, May 29, 2026. The film has been widely noted for its absence of narrative structure despite strong visual work by cinematographer Jeremy Cox. A24's decision to greenlight based on internet metrics rather than a screenplay written by Will Soodik is now a documented case study in what that bet produces. Parsons was 20 years old when the film released.
