Originally built as an ATSF GP7 ( #2741), this locomotive was rebuilt by the Santa Fe in Cleburne, Texas, during the 1970s. The modernization gave it an updated, chopped-nose look, new “Topeka” cab, and a new number ( #2175). It was later sold to the Bangor and Aroostook in Maine, where it was renumbered to #23. Following changes in corporate ownership, the locomotive joined the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic roster under the same number, before being acquired by Morristown and Erie in 2014.

Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range was known for operating a fleet of heavy-duty six-axle EMD locomotives to haul iron ore and taconite. In 2002, they sought to bolster the SD40-3 fleet with some examples of EMD’s latest model, the SD70M. Built to UP specs to save on production time, they proudly displayed the road’s Arrowhead logos while hauling heavy unit trains in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

As they approach (and pass) their 25-year birthdays, the Union Pacific SD70M fleet is starting to show its age. Replacement equipment doors and trucks, faded and chipped paint, and burned-off striping on the engine room doors are all typical features of the class today.

Santa Fe’s GP7u program, launched in 1972, rebuilt EMD GP7 locomotives to extend their operational life. The rebuild included chopped front hoods to improve visibility and new cabs, commonly known as “Topeka Cabs,” named for Santa Fe’s Topeka shops, where the work was performed. The locomotives also received upgraded prime movers with new components and four exhaust stacks. Units originally equipped with dynamic brakes had that equipment deactivated as part of the program. These modifications significantly extended the service life of the locomotives, and many remained in service through the BNSF merger.
