Spend LABOR DAY WEEKEND 👀 Looking at LABOR •

Barbara Kopple is an American film director acclaimed for her documentary work. She is credited with pioneering a renaissance of cinema vérité, and known for her “fly-on-the-wall” filmmaking style. Both HARLAN COUNTY U.S.A. and AMERICAN DREAM follow the workers’ struggle and fight for better conditions. This pair of films gives a sense of what has and has not actually changed for the laborer in over a decades’ time.

HARLAN COUNTY U.S.A. - 4K Restoration (Barbara Kopple, 1976, 103min, United States, PG)

Barbara Kopple’s Academy Award–winning HARLAN COUNTY USA unflinchingly documents a grueling coal miners’ strike in a small Kentucky town. With unprecedented access, Kopple and her crew captured the miners’ sometimes violent struggles with strikebreakers, local police, and company thugs. Featuring a haunting soundtrack—with legendary country and bluegrass artists Hazel Dickens, Merle Travis, Sarah Gunning, and Florence Reece—the film is a heartbreaking record of the thirteen-month struggle between a community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line.

AMERICAN DREAM - 4K Restoration (Barbara Kopple/Lawrence Silk/Cathy Caplan/Thomas Haneke, 1990, 98min, United States, PG-13)

Winner of the 1991 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, Barbara Kopple’s American Dream unflinchingly details the explosive 1985–86 labor strike against Hormel Foods in Austin, Minnesota, a city ripped apart in the tumult. Fed up with dangerous plant conditions and drastic wage cuts, Austin’s Local P-9 went against the advice of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and, with the help of labor activist Ray Rogers’s campaign to damage the meatpacking giant’s public reputation, conducted a nearly yearlong walkout. But as the strike dragged on, some workers found themselves desperate to make ends meet and ready to cross the picket line, dividing a community already betrayed by a once progressive company and roiled by blockades, riots, and the intervention of the National Guard. Following up her landmark documentary Harlan County USA with another engrossing report from the trenches of working

LATE FAME (Kent Jones, 2025, 96min, United States/France, NR, Comedy/Drama, Magnolia Pictures)

The great Willem Dafoe lends his delicate gravitas to the role of Ed Saxberger, a forgotten New York poet who works in the post office. After an eager and flattering young admirer (Edmund Donovan) appears on his doorstep, Saxberger is beckoned into a coterie of twenty-something admirers who anoint him as a rediscovered genius. Intoxicated by the attention—and by the alluring presence of Gloria, the group’s “tragic heroine” (a sinuous, Kurt Weill–crooning Greta Lee)—Saxberger gradually reckons with the authenticity of his newfound poetic circle. This thoughtful, witty second feature from Kent Jones (DIANE), working from a sly and hugely entertaining script by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Samy Burch (MAY DECEMBER, is a wistful yet unromantic look at a lost idea of downtown New York.

SPECIAL SCREENING ~ THEYDREAM (William David Caballero, 2026, 91min, United States, NR, The Film Collaborative) theydreamfilm

MONDAY, 8/31 @ 1PM & 7PM

WINNER: NEXT Special Jury Award for Creative Expression (Sundance)

THEYDREAM is a deeply personal autobiographical documentary that traces how art can become a lifeline in the wake of loss. Drawing on two decades of mixed-media filmmaking, Caballero revisits his family’s history in Fayetteville, North Carolina—interweaving new 2D and 3D animations with live-action vérité, archival materials, and raw, deeply human conversations with his mother.

Anchored in the death of his grandmother Isolina, the film follows Caballero’s mother as she spirals into grief and self-blame for not being at her mother’s side in her final moments. Rather than allowing her to retreat, Caballero hands her a camera and the tools of animation—inviting her to collaborate in bringing her mother back to life. Viewers witness her trembling first attempts to animate, the tears she sheds while performing in front of a green screen and recreating her mother’s voicemails, and the unexpected reawakening of her artistic power.

The film also confronts Caballero’s own unhealed wounds: from animated sequences featuring deceased relatives to a raw, emotional reckoning with his father about accepting his bisexuality. Tender, funny, vulnerable, and unvarnished, these moments reveal the fierce loyalty and imperfections of a Puerto Rican family navigating illness, identity, and generational trauma together.

Through a one-of-a-kind blend of miniature artistry, handcrafted figurines, digital rotoscoping, and full 3D motion capture, Caballero and his mother literally transform themselves into their ancestors—reanimating family stories with honesty, complexity, and profound love.

Ultimately, THEYDREAM becomes a cinematic act of survival: a testament to creative collaboration, intergenerational healing, and the ability of art to resurrect memory, restore connection, and guide families through the darkest grief toward light.

Thank you, Dwayne. Coming from you, that means a lot…. • Celebrating 20 years • LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE • tix on sale!

SUN, 8/30 @ 10:30AM & 4:30PM + THURS, 9/3 @ 7PM

Father Richard (Greg Kinnear) is desperately trying to sell his motivational success program... with no success. Meanwhile, “pro-honesty” mom Sheryl (Toni Collette) lends support to her eccentric family, including her depressed brother (Steve Carell), fresh out of the hospital after being jilted by his lover. Then there are the younger Hoovers - the seven-year-old, would-be beauty queen Olive (Abigail Breslin) and Dwayne (Paul Dano), a Nietzsche-reading teen who has taken a vow of silence. Topping off the family is the foul-mouthed grandfather (Alan Arkin), whose outrageous behavior recently got him evicted from his retirement home. When Olive is invited to compete in the “Little Miss Sunshine” pageant in far-off California, the family piles into their rusted-out VW bus to rally behind her - with riotously funny results.

Our next LATE NIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE (aka Tangerine Dream Night!):

Michael Mann’s THIEF (1981) + William Friedkin’s SORCERER (1977)

Saturday, 8/29 @ 9:30PM
Sunday, 8/30 @ 10:00AM

THIEF (1981) -
(also notably a criterion closet pick of Ryan Coogler and Ayo Edebiri 👀)
The contemporary American auteur Michael Mann’s bold artistic sensibility was already fully formed when he burst out of the gate with Thief, his debut feature. James Caan stars, in one of his most riveting performances, as a no-nonsense ex-con professional thief planning to leave the criminal world behind after one last score—but he discovers that escape is not as simple as he’d hoped. Finding hypnotic beauty in neon and rain-slick streets, sparks and steel, Thief effortlessly established the moody stylishness, tactile approach, and drama that would also define such later iconic Mann films as Heat, The Insider, Ali, and The Last of the Mohicans.

SORCERER (1977) -
A hallucinatory journey into the heart of darkness, William Friedkin’s pulse-pounding reimagining of the suspense classic The Wages of Fear was dismissed upon its release, only to be recognized decades later as one of the New Hollywood’s boldest auteur statements. In a remote Latin American village, four desperate fugitives—a New Jersey gangster (Roy Scheider), a Mexican assassin (Francisco Rabal), an unscrupulous Parisian businessman (Bruno Cremer), and an Arab terrorist (Amidou)—take on a doomed mission: transporting two trucks full of highly explosive nitroglycerin through the treacherous jungle. Aided by Tangerine Dream’s otherworldly synth score, Friedkin turns each bump in the road into a tour de force of cold-sweat tension—conjuring a hauntingly nihilistic vision of a world ruled by chance and fate.

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS

SATURDAY, 8/29 @ 4:30PM + WEDNESDAY, 9/2 @ 7PM ~ link in bio for tix

Royal Tenenbaum and his wife Etheline had three children and then they separated. All three children are extraordinary — all geniuses. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father’s fault. “The Royal Tenenbaums” is the story of the family’s sudden, unexpected reunion one recent winter.

Our Back to School POP-IN event is also on SATURDAY from 2-5pm! Come by and check out all our movie posters and merch for purchase ~ Plus Peel Gallery + Photo Lab & Joe Van Gogh Coffee will be there too with some tunes from WXYC Chapel Hill DJs!
