Weak Neck Week is finally coming back October 19-25.

For those who don’t know, Weak Neck Week is my annual celebration of absurd beheadings in cinema. it’s real dumb, but also real fun.

Check back this Wednesday for the Weak Neck Week shirt reveal with artwork by Matt Stikker.

Mr. Nello has arrived.

I love , so when his book came out I had to pick up a copy. It’s exactly what I hoped it would be, page after page of insane vintage tech and nostalgia. I can’t recommend it enough.

Follow him if you’re not already and pick up a copy of his book today.

💥 PREY DAY IS 1 MONTH AWAY 💥

Prey Day is an annual celebration of the day one of my favorite films, Deadly Prey, debuted in video stores back in 1987. It’s the perfect day to sit back and watch Mike Danton kill mercenaries for 90 minutes straight. It’s streaming on this year, so if you don’t have a Korean VHS tape, you can watch it there.

MAKE YOUR PREY DAY PLANS NOW. NOVEMBER 2 IS COMING.

VHSeptember Day 30: Pumpkins and Witches and Bats, Oh My!

It is the final day of VHSeptember and the theme is giving spooky season vibes, so I’m watching Chillers. This is a horror anthology, which is one of my favorite subgenres. The wraparound story is about 5 strangers being stuck at a bus station as they wait for their bus to arrive. They quickly realize that all 5 of them had nightmares last night so they start sharing the nightmares to pass the time. One lady had a nightmare about a pool haunted by the ghosts of various people who died in it. Another had a nightmare about a camping trip gone wrong when one of the campers goes wild, eventually gnawing his own arm off to get out of a trap. There’s a vampire story and a resurrection story and even a story about a spirit from an ancient civilization coming back and wrecking shop inside a college lecture hall. None of the individual stories really stand out, but everything is well made and you never know where each story is going to go next. And the end, where they bring the wraparound story to a close, is a great finish. If you love horror anthologies, this is a great one to add to the collection.

Thank you to and for another great year of VHSeptember themes. I put a movie up every day, so I’m pretty proud of myself.

Now it’s time to get into October for some spooky tapes and the return of WEAK NECK WEEK!

VHSeptember Day 29: VHS Minus Color

Lots of people are going in the black and white movie direction today but I thought this was a perfect chance to showcase the most sun faded tape in my whole collection. This copy of Charles Band’s Laserblast looks like it was actually blasted by a laser.

This is a fun little flick. Some legitimately rad stop motion/puppet aliens lose their laser in America. A misfit kid named Billy, who seems to be allergic to wearing shirts, finds it and s**t goes down. The laser starts to turn Billy into a monster hellbent on blowing stuff up with his laser, which seems pretty relatable honestly. He blows up cars, Roddy McDowall, a telephone booth, a mailbox, Eddie Deezen, a plane and, hilariously, a billboard for Star Wars, which had just come out the year before. The soundtrack is solid, the effects hold up and the runtime is short, so this one is a pretty fun watch. It’s on if you’re interested.

VHSeptember Day 28: I Love the 90s

Today I’m watching The Net because this movie’s existence is one of the most 90s things that’s ever happened. It’s such a pure dose of early Internet paranoia. This is a world where the idea of having your personal information online is completely terrifying. A world where floppy discs are everywhere. A world where Sandy Bullock orders a damn pizza on a site called pizza.net. Unfortunately, not long after ordering that pizza, Sandy stumbles into a hacking plot that threatens to destabilize the world. The fun of this movie is how it shows the idea of online connectivity being used as a weapon. Someone changes Dennis Miller’s (yeah he’s in this and honestly he’s kinda great because he’s just Dennis Miller) prescription info and he dies from an allergic reaction. Someone alters an HIV diagnosis, which causes a homophobic politician to kill himself. It’s almost like we shouldn’t put so much trust in those darn computers. At its core, this is a capably made thriller that follows the 90s thriller blueprint to a T. It’s kinda boring at times, but Sandra Bullock is great and all the dated tech just adds to the fun. The real standout is Jeremy Northam as the villain. He makes a meal out of every dastardly thing he does and his accent just makes it all the more exaggerated. I would t recommend you watch this one, but if you’re looking for a time capsule back to 1995, you can’t go wrong with this one.

VHSeptember Day 27: Rock And/Or Roll

Today I’m watching Heavy Metal Massacre. This one is only for the most experienced amateur movie enthusiasts. Yes, there is some massacring, but the majority of this very long-feeling 80 minute movie is lengthy montages of closeups on random stuff while rock songs blast on the soundtrack. It’s like a bunch of early MTV days music videos with some murders interspersed. We do meet some characters. There’s the killer, some inept cops, the killer’s rat faced drug dealer and a bunch of female victims. Other than the killer, none of them stand out though. The killer though. Yeah, he saves this whole thing in spite of himself. Bobbi Young is somehow irresistible to all women despite having zero charisma and seemingly hating everyone he interacts with. It’s some major Tommy Wiseau vibes. This is not an easy watch, but if you’re looking for an SOV ego trip with a seemingly never ending rock accompaniment, this is the one for you.
