AS IF I’D LIVED AND FORGOTTEN IT reflects on three decades of the work of filmmaker Liz Roberts (). This celebration will take the form of a zine published by B-Roll Press ()(Saint Piñero and Sage Ó Tuama ) and a screening, presented on Friday, June 12th at 7pm, by The Film-Makers’ Cooperative at Millennium Film Workshop (), organized by Matt McKinzie (.mckz) and Joe Wakeman ().

“The films — Cicatrix, Midwaste, A list of things that make the heart beat faster, Even god, and COLORADO — span three decades and three formats: 16mm, VHS, and digital video. The two early works, Cicatrix and A list, still feel future facing to me, even though they are old. The three films that are more recent, Midwaste, Even god, and COLORADO are like waves of aftermath. They are reckonings with the possibility of repair and resolving the past—personal, familial, structural. All five works either reference each other or hold the first images of friends who reappear in later works. For the last few years I’ve kept thinking and saying: time doesn’t pass, it accumulates.” —Liz Roberts

On MONDAY, JUNE 15th at 7pm, join us at the Brooklyn Academy of Music () for OUT OF THE CLOSET AND INTO THE CO-OP: a program of early q***r films from the Film-Makers’ Cooperative, curated by Matt McKinzie (.mckz) and Conor Williams () on the occasion of and the Coop’s 65th anniversary.

Tickets for this program are now available at bam.org (also linked in our bio!)

The Film-Makers Cooperative (a.k.a. The New American Cinema Group), founded in 1961 by a group of artists including Jonas Mekas, Jack Smith, and Ken and Flo Jacobs, is an essential New York organization for experimental film. In 1964, Mekas and the Jacobses were arrested for screening Smith’s q***r classic Flaming Creatures at the New Bowery Theater. The ensuing court case catalyzed a national conversation surrounding censorship and freedom of artistic expression, and solidified the Cooperative’s reputation as a countercultural nexus for filmmakers on the margins. As the Cooperative enters its 65th year in operation, this program seeks to highlight the exceptional way in which the organization served as an incubator for early q***r cinema in the wake of that groundbreaking trial. Q***r and trans Americans are currently under threat from the federal government in ways not seen since the time of the Cooperative’s founding. In the 1960s, when most of these films were made, LGBTQ+ people faced intense repression and police violence. These short films, born out of that atmosphere of oppression, found new ways of formal expression that encouraged q***r artists to be out and free.

Films will be projected on 16mm and digitally. We hope to see you there!
