Cinema Salem is an independent three-screen movie theater in Salem, Mass. Prior to that, a succession of other cinemas occupied the same space. Many North Shore folks recall seeing movies here over the years -- from blockbusters to arthouse fare to cheapo dollar-a-ticket shows. Since this camera is not sync-sound, everything you hear in this film was added in post-production. We hear the grainy, yet colorful film is a breath of fresh air. Thursday, July 30th is Art House Theater Day! Yay! We are thrilled to participate by showing the 1976 dark comedy drama classic NETWORK. This film was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won three of the four acting awards, a feat not many films have done. Directed by Sidney Lumet, the film stars Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Robert Duvall, Wesley Addy, Ned Beatty, and Beatrice Straight. We have two showtimes of 4:30 and7:15 on Thursday, Just 30th. This Wednesdays Classic is THE SEARCHERS. A 1956 epic Western film directed by John Ford; starring John Wayne. This one is considered the greatest Western ever made so if you were unsure about Westerns, start here. Not only considered the greatest Western, but one of the greatest films for that matter.

We’ll screen The Searchers twice — on Wednesday night (July 22) as part of our regular classics series, and on Saturday afternoon (July 25). The Saturday screening will be followed by a discussion led by Matt Taylor, who has led discussions of films for many years in Beverly and now, happily, with us. There will be plenty to talk about.
