Made on discarded film stock. Released the year of Hong Kong’s handover. Still feels like a punch to the gut.

Fruit Chan’s MADE IN HONG KONG (1997) captures the thrill of adolescence on the edge of collapse. Shot on a minimal budget with non-professional actors, it became a landmark of independent Hong Kong cinema — rough-edged, tender, angry, and unforgettable.

Join us for one of BLEAK WEEK’s most electrifying and unexpectedly tender films, co-presented by Amoment Books

👂 Long before we worried our phones were listening, there was THE EAR.

Banned for decades for its chilling depiction of state surveillance, Karel Kachyňa’s 1970 THE EAR opens BLEAK WEEK: CINEMA OF DESPAIR at The Roxie on June 5 in a new 4K restoration.

Over the course of one sleepless night, a government official and his wife spiral into paranoia, suspicion, and darkly funny marital unraveling as they begin to suspect “the ear” of the regime is listening to their every word.

Co-presented by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) with a brief intro connecting the film’s themes of surveillance and privacy to today.

Join us to experience one of cinema’s great political nightmares together on the big screen.

TIME AND WATER opens June 5 at The Roxie, with Academy Award–nominated director Sara Dosa (Fire of Love) joining us in person for a Q&A on June 6.

As Iceland’s glaciers disappear within a lifetime, acclaimed writer Andri Snær Magnason turns to memory — of family, landscape, and time itself — to hold onto what is slipping away.

Following the loss of his beloved grandparents and the death of his country’s glaciers, Magnason constructs a cinematic time capsule in this deeply moving, visually stunning meditation on climate grief, memory, home, and what we choose to leave behind.

Because one Tony Leung is never enough.

Back by popular demand, we’ve added more screenings of The Silent Friend and Wong Kar-wai’s immortal Chungking Express. Both now playing Monday, May 25 & Wednesday, May 27.

“There’s a movie out...that’s 2.5 hours long and is primarily about Tony Leung befriending a tree. It’s extraordinary.” — Vulture critic Bilge Ebiri on The Silent Friend

“Tony Leung gives one of the most swoon-worthy performances in modern cinema.” — IndieWire on Chungking Express

Yes, that Tony Leung.
